Probably around the late eighteen hundreds is when window locks came to be. They are made to keep the windows
locked and burglars out. They are made to fit every window every made. Windows made of steel, vinyl, aluminum or
wood, there are window locks to fit them.
If you own an old Victorian home, there are windows that need new locks. Through the years the sashes can become
brittle and need new locks. They can be made of solid brass and can be brushed or have a mellow antique finish.
They are spring loaded, have a pivoting arm and do require the catch to be mounted on the lower sash, not the top.
There are so many finishes and styles; surely there is one to fit into your windows.
Glass can be broken for sure and it is harder to secure windows than doors. People want to feel safe in their
own homes. Window locks can help them feel secure. Levers are not really that safe as anyone can get into the home
easily. Install window locks that can be locked with a key. Some window locks come with just one key, so there will
not be twenty keys lying around. When buying a home and it has the window locks that have keys, many people will
change the locks, not knowing where the key might be.
Another one would be the famous deadbolt lock. These are used on the sash frame or a double hung window. These
are very easy to pry open from the outside so be sure the window is fitted with a four point steel deadbolt.
Sliding glass doors and windows surely need the window locks. Used on these would be the pin and jam lock. They
are put into the slide track to be sure the window or door cannot be slid open from the outside. Get that lock as
well, double security.
Putting brass window locks on the windows in your home can add a touch of class. They are sturdy enough and can
be heavy but work well with the older homes. The finishes are oil rubbed bronze, polished brass or antique brass.
They are made of solid brass and come with the catch and mounting hardware and the Tum mechanism.
As the old saying, ‘locks just keep honest people honest’ has a ring of truth to it. If someone wants to get in,
they will. Ask any policeman and they will tell you the same thing. Window locks just add a higher level of
security to the home. They will also help keep the windows secure in case of high winds or a storm. Many window
locks can and are used with the home security systems.
If a complete over haul of the window locks is not necessary you can just fix the ones that are already there.
If you cannot unlock the window it just may need a good push or some WD-40 to loosen it up. Some could just be
locked in place and there is nothing to budge it. So then probably it would have to be changed. Be sure to get the
right size, as they come in different styles and sizes.
